We break down what the Department of Energy (DOE) pool pump regulations actually do, how the Weighted Energy Factor (WEF) works, and why the rule feels like a ban even when it isn’t written as a simple prohibition. The biggest shift is product availability: most manufacturers stopped making higher-horsepower single-speed pumps because they can’t hit the required energy efficiency levels.

We also dig into the part that doesn’t get talked about enough: programming. A variable speed pool pump can still run at full RPM, so the regulation alone doesn’t magically force lower energy use. The real savings come from smart run schedules that keep circulation steady at low speed, then step up only when you need more flow for a cleaner, spa jets, or water features.
